  Australian Normality Index – November 2020

  Forethought launched the Normality Index (NI) immediately as we went into lockdown in March 2020. We now have 17 waves of data (weekly for the first 12 weeks and now monthly since July). Here are the key findings from our November pulse. Please note: Fieldwork for November was conducted prior to the South Australian outbreak and lockdown.

  Aus Normality Index – Week 9

  This week the Normality Index provides a story of steady improvement in the drivers of our normality. Week 9 saw the Normality Index at 59% up from 52% last week. Our most important driver of normality, confidence in the economy, remains low but is up by 13% from last week. And Australians are increasingly feeling comfortable socialising and moving about in public which are both up by 20% this week to 64% and 60%, both important drivers of our sense of normality.

  The Australian Normality Index (Week 7) has revealed two important changes in Australians’ sense of wellbeing and an interesting lesson for organisations who are seeking to maintain relevance and achieve the idealised state of partnering with customers.

  Week 2 Fielded 2 – 5 April 2020 Australians have responded to the CV-19 crisis with gritty realism based on how they are rating how normal life is right now, scoring life at 35% compared to same time last year. Comparing this to our partner poll, USA Normality Index which shows Americans are more optimistically rating life at 49% normality.

  Fielded 16 – 20th April 75% of Australians believe it will take 6 months or longer to return to normal. They are re-evaluating their priorities and what will play a role in the lives post crisis. Some brands’ response has been pitch-perfect. Others have been tone deaf and we are seeing the difference in the Australian Normality Index.

  Week 1 Fielded 26 – 29 March 2020 AUSTRALIAN NORMALITY INDEX: Whilst we are starting to see the Australian rate of CV-19 infection flattening, we are most noticing the loss of freedom to move about normally in public and make future plans. These two behaviours represent 47% of what makes Australians feel normal. And right now, these two elements of our day to day life are feeling extraordinarily abnormal.

  Week 3 Fielded 10th – 13th April 2020​ 75% of Australian’s cant see life returning to normal for at least 6 months, and within that group there has been a 36% increase in the number of people who don’t believe life will ever return to a pre-coronavirus normality. For this 15% of Australian’s they believe there will be a new, as yet unimagined, normal.

  Australians are inching back to feeling normal, but across age segments COVID-19 is being experienced differently… and those results might surprise you. Our older Aussies are taking it in their stride, and our younger adults are feeling anxious and distrusting. Marketers cannot take a one size fits all approach. Marketers need to carefully observe the different segments behaviours and respond in relevant ways.
